Competency Goal 4: The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate technology to build an understanding of how food provides energy and materials for growth and repair of the body.

Objectives

4.01 Explain why organisms require energy to live and grow.

4.02 Show how calories can be used to compare the chemical energy of different foods.

4.03 Discuss how foods provide both energy and nutrients for living organisms.

4.04 Identify starches and sugars as carbohydrates.

Glossary

  • Absorb- to take in
  • Calorie- a measure of the energy of food - the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius
  • Carbohydrates- a group of nutrients that provide energy: sugars and starches
  • Cholesterol- a waxy substance found in human tissue
  • Diet- everything that is consumed by a living organism
  • Fats- a group of nutrients that provide energy and building blocks for development of some body systems
  • Digestion- the breaking down of food into forms the body can use
  • Enzyme- a digestive chemical that changes food
  • Metabolism- the number of calories burned at any given moment
  • Minerals- substances that work with vitamins, necessary for growth and development
  • Nutrient- a material your body gets from food to use for energy, growth, and repair
  • Proteins- a group of nutrients that provide energy and building blocks for growth and repair of body tissues; found in meats and vegetables
  • System- a group of organs that work together to do a job
  • Vitamin- a nutrient the body needs in small amouts to work properly
