Activity: Food Labels
Question: What are foods made of?
Vocabulary: Fats, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins
Materials: Nutrition facts from a variety of different food labels
Background: According to U.S. law, companies must include a food's ingredients, nutritional value, and number of calories per serving on all packaging. Nutrition information includes what nutrients a food contains and how much. Nutrients listed are fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates and protein. Ingredients must be listed in order by mass from largest quantity to smallest quantity. the first substance listed is the main ingredient. If food contains any vitamins or minerals they will also be listed.
Procedures: Have the students use the labels to discuss the nutrients and vitamins found in different foods.
