Activity:  Creating a Scale Model


Question: How do scale models represent relative size?

Vocabulary: scale model, relative size

Materials:
chalk
parking lot
dimensions of a bobsled (or any object - Columbus's boats, a bus, etc.)
several meter sticks


Procedure:

  • 1.  Students are given the dimensions of a 2 man and 4 man bobsled.
  • 2.  In groups they draw to scale each sled with chalk in the parking lot.
  • Students then draw the sleds in their Science notebook using the following scale: 1 cm. (mm if appropriate) = 1 meter
