NC Standard:  2.02


Activity:  How Landforms are Shaped by Water


Question: How are landforms shaped by the movement of water?

Materials:
"Night Lights" poster
atlas
paper
pencils
chart paper
markers
a worksheet of a US relief map


Procedure:

1.  Put students in groups to make observations of physical, political, vegetation, population, resource, and climate maps of the US.

2.  Have one student from each group will share their group observations by putting sticky notes on the appropriate chart labeled with the different types of maps and share their information with the class.

3.  Display the poster "Night Lights".

4.  Ask the following questions and lead the discussion:

  •  During what time of the day was this image taken?
  •   Do you think this image was taken from the ground, an airplane, or space?
  •   What do the areas of light on the image indicate?
  •   What do the areas of dark on the image indicate?
  •   Are the areas of light equally dispersed?
  •   Do you see any patterns? If so, identify them.

5.  Identify and point out specific cities, water bodies, or other specific features.

Independent Practice:  Using a worksheet of the United States relief map and the United States at night map label at least 5 major cities and 5 bodies of water.
