Materials: Assortment of rocks, tile streak plates, paper
Procedures: Divide the students into collaborative working groups of 3 or 4. Provide each group with an assortment of different rocks.
Have the team select one of the rocks from their assortment and try to make a streak on the tile plate.
Does the rock make a streak and if so, what is the color? Record results.
Repeat this process with the other rocks inthe assortment. Record reults.
Have the teams sort the rocks according to the color of streak it makes.
Have the teams discuss the results of this activity and hypothesize why the streaks match or don't match the rock colors.
Continuation:Have the teams attempt to write on paper with the rocks that made streaks on the tile.
