Activity:  Magnetism

Question: Which rocks are attracted by a magnet?

Vocabulary: magnetism

Background: Try to include at least one rock that contains iron, such as galena, in the collection of rocks used for this activity. Lodestone makes an excellent addition to the collection for this exercise. Lodestone is nature's magnet.

Materials: Assortment of rocks, magnet

Procedure: 
Test each rock in the collection to see if any seem to be attracted by the magnet. make two groups of rocks - those that are attracted by the magnet and those that are not. Record your results.
