Activity: What are crystals?

Question: Are all crystals the same?

Background: This activity will show students that all crystals are not the same shape.

Materials: a hand lens or magnifying glass, sugar, salt, sand

Procedure:

1. Examine each crystal with a magnifying glass or hand lens.
2. Record any crystal structure you see. What shape is the crystal? Can you find the crystal that is a cube?
3. Using the circles below draw your crystal and label it.
