The Skeletal and Muscle Systems of the Human Body

NC Standard:  4.02

Activity:  Science Simon

Question: What are the functions of your bones?

Vocabulary: protection, locomotion, support

Procedure:

Ask the students to stand up and join in a game of Simon Says.
Ask students to think about what makes their bodies move.
In the course of the game, ask the students to run in place, touch their toes, clap their hands, stoop down, and reach up high.
Finally, ask them to pretend they have no skeletons inside them.
After students return to their seats ask them the following questions:
What do bones do for your body? (Bones hold the body up and give it support.)
When you were running in place, what bones were moving? (Bones allow locomotion or movement.)
What is inside your ribs?
What is inside your skull?
What do your ribs and skull do for you? (These bones protect your vital organs.)

Conclusion: Your bones support you, protect vital organs, and allow you to move.
