Water Cycle - Activities

Activity:  Evaporation

Materials:  2 jars (one with a cover)                  water

Procedure:

  • 1.  Place an equal amount of water in two jars.
  • 2.  Cover one jar.
  • 3.  Place both jars on a table overnight.
  • 4.  Check them in the morning.
  • Observation:

    __________________________________________________________________________________________

Question:  Why is less water in the open jar than in the capped jar?

    __________________________________________________________________________________________

    Conclusion:
    __________________________________________________________________________________________

    __________________________________________________________________________________________

    __________________________________________________________________________________________

Why:  Even at room temperature, the tiny particles or molecules of water in the uncapped jar move fast enough to fly out and escape into the air.  The water turns into water vapor; an invisible gas.  This process is known as “evaporation.”
