Materials: weather symbols
blue yarn
yellow yarn
map of North America
Procedure:
1. Organize the children into small groups.
2. Have each group make a set of weather symbols (sun, rain, snow, partly cloudy, partly sunny).
3. Have students watch a T.V. weather report, listen to the radio, or read the newspaper report.
4. Use the information from the report to place the weather symbols on the North America map.
5. Use blue yarn to show where a cold front is and yellow to show where a warm front is.
6. Add arrows to show which way the fronts are moving.
7. Students may add a large H to show high pressure and a large L to show low pressure.
Further Questions: Why is weather different in different places? How can we find out the weather in North America? What symbols could we use to report and record the weather on a map?
Line of Learning: This line is drawn to provide students with a space to share their experimental learning in words or pictures.
